I feel like I had to write a post about One Born Every Minute as I am still thinking about last nights episode, which is the sure sign of a fantastic programme. Love it or hate it, you have to admit that it is pretty amazing tv. For those of you not in the UK One Born is a fly on the wall documentary series in a labour ward, following women and their birth partners as they arrive in hospital, through their labour and then watching them give birth. There are tears (always tears, often mine), laughter, loneliness and love. This is what makes it so great. These are real people who you are seeing at their most vulnerable and most happy. I can’t imagine agreeing to be filmed if it was me, but I am so grateful to these people that have becuase the result is amazing. Even those who arrive all macho (the dad’s to be) and feigning disinterest are by the end reduced to tears as they hold their baby for the first time. So what makes us love it so much? Is it beacuse we relate to the situations that we are watching, having been there ourselves (I am assuming that this is the case for the majority of veiwers), is it because you are seeing their vulnerability and their fears, their love for one another? I think it is probably a bit of all of the above. Even those who you don’t think you can relate to at first you end up liking by the end of the programme.
Then there are some that you love instantly. Last night the most lovely couple from Columbia and Mexico were on and they were so sweet to each other. This poor guy had grown up in extreme poverty, some days without food and water in a village in Columbia and age 8 had watched his mother die in childbirth alone and here he was telling us his hopes and dreams for his son and telling his wife how much he loved her. I was bawling eyes out. That baby Diego is one very lucky boy. The week before watching Sasha walk into hospital alone carrying her bags and car seat. It made me feel so lucky for what I have and at the same time so very sad. The best tv in a very long time. Well done Dragonfly TV… amazing!!!!
