“Should I use disposable or reusable breast pads?” is a question often asked by new breastfeeding mums or mums to be who are weighing up their options and are unsure of which to go for. This is a quick guide to help you make your mind up!
Ok, so for those of you who don’t know whether you need to use them or not.. Breast pads are used to soak up excess milk while breastfeeding and ensure there are no leaks. Not everybody needs them. At times I did and at times I didn’t. I mostly used them at night. Everybody is different and some have a huge milk supply and some less. You will not know this until you start feeding. I have even heard of women who have had different experiences with their first and second child.
Disposable breast pads come in packs of 50+ pads and they have a little sticky part on the back to attach to your bra. Personally, I never found a disposable that didn’t show through my bra. We are talking 4+ years ago but generally they are pretty bulky and from what I hear they are still pretty bulky. If the sticky bit stops being sticky, they can fall out when you undo your bra. When they get wet they can become cold against your breast which isn’t particularly pleasant. This is not just my experience but what lots of mums have shared with me. Disposable breast pads are cheaper to buy a pack of, but if you use them regularly you will need more so in the long run they will cost more.
Reusable breast pads or washable pads such as our Bamboo breast pads are used until they become saturated then you simply, wash, dry and use again. Although the initial outlay is higher, you will save money in the long run. You will also be doing your bit for the environment! Bamboo is naturally absorbent, so these pads are thinner than disposables yet hold lots of liquid. Being slimmer means they won’t show through your bra or clothes. They also have a double layer and an invisible waterproof laminate backing so they won’t leak. Our bamboo pads are VERY soft, so they feel lovely next to your skin and when they are wet they won’t get cold. They stay in place (with the label worn to the outside). There are 2 sizes within the pack, the regular for daytime and the larger for nighttime. Don’t just take our word for it. Popular parenting website Emma’s Diary listed us as number one in their breastfeeding essentials and we have a Bizzie Baby Silver award.
