In our first of our retailer Q&A we meet the lovely Kristina from Bon Tot.
When did you start Bon Tot?
My husband and I had the idea for Bon Tot when I was pregnant, three years ago. We registered the name then, and bought the domain and all that, but we didn’t start trading for another two years from then.
Tell us a bit about your business?
We are located in Edinburgh, we have a shop in the Stockbridge area here. We sell ethically manufactured, well designed basics as well as minimal unisex pieces. Our motto for clothes is ‘simply good design’. We like imaginative, creative toys so we carry a lot of cardboard and wooden toys with story telling as the basis of play.
How many children do you have?
I have one daughter, named Clemence (who goes by her full name or CC or The C Monster), who is 2 1/2. We aren’t planning on having anymore. CC and our dog Frisco complete our family!
How do you juggle business and family?
With the help of my in laws mostly. It would be very difficult for us without their support. We also have an excellent nursery who support and love our daughter, so it’s easy for us to be really present with our business when she isn’t with us. She is with me two days a week, with her dad two days, with grandma and grandad one day and at nursery two days. It’s an amazing schedule that works very well for us.
My husband works full time as an architect as well as running our website, creating all written content and sharing social media duties. We work together almost every night after Clemence goes to bed as well. It’s a lot of work but we are happy with the balance.
Best thing about running your own business?
Ooooh, goodness. Being in control of my working life is probably the best thing for me. I have never really liked a lot of rules and I’m not afraid of change so it’s a good fit for me. It’s really exciting to have an idea and see it come to fruition as well. I like that.
Favourite Mama Design product?
Favourite product, oh dear! Gosh, I’m torn between the Cellular Blankets and the BabaSac. I love the colour of the blankets, there isn’t anything else out there as vibrant, affordable and versatile. And the BabaSac is just a great idea. It’s not only hard to find affordable sleep sacks that are stylish, it’s always a ‘two a year’ purchase because they are seasonal. I think it’s so amazing to have a zip out lining, it’s just a great idea.
Thanks for sharing Kristina!
