Lots of parents choose to swaddle their newborn babies. Swaddling makes babies feel safe and secure and mimics the feeling that they had in the womb. You can swaddle using large muslin sometimes referred to as a muslin swaddle or a large cellular blanket (if it is particularly cold). You can buy special swaddling blankets but really there is no need and with a large muslin or cellular blanket you can use them for other things once you have stopped swaddling your baby.
With my children both were swaddled for about 8 weeks (while they were in a moses basket) and then they moved into a baby sleeping bag after that.
We advise using a large muslin for safe swaddling. Mama Designs swaddle muslins are available from January 2017. It is important that you do not swaddle too tightly either as this can cause hip dysplasia. You can read more about that in this NCT article.
You can follow our easy guide to swaddling.
- Place your muslin swaddle or blanket in a diamond shape and then fold in half to a triangle. Place your baby down so their head is just above the fold.
- Take the left side of the swaddle and bring it over your baby’s chest (securely covering their right arm which should be against their side and bent slightly) and tuck it under their body (leaving left arm out).
- Next fold the bottom of the swaddle up to cover your baby’s feet.
- Wrap the right side of the swaddle across your baby’s chest (their left arm should be against the body and slightly bent) and securely tuck the excess material under your baby.
Your baby’s legs should be able to move rather than be held too securely.
