So tell us a bit about Mummy Social? Mummy Social is run for mums by mums. It is a free app which helps mums chat and meet up with other local mums in their area. It is complemented by our social media pages on Instagram and Facebook. We have two ambassadors on board, the best-selling author Sarah Turner (The Unmumsy Mum) and TV Personality, Helen Skelton.
When did it all start? How did you get the idea?Mummy Social was founded in January 2015 by Devon mum-of-three Josie Barron. Having herself experienced loneliness as a new mum, Josie set about creating a website that would offer a solution to the isolation so many mums face. Using her self-taught website coding skills, Josie initially built and ran Mummy Social from the desk in her daughter, Annabelle’s nursery. Word about the site quickly spread and, to date, more than 100,000 mums have signed up.
How can people join? It’s super easy. Simply download the app and complete your profile! From there, you will be able to browse the mums’ page where you’ll find a list of all the other mums nearby. If you want to narrow down your search, you can use our filter to specify certain criteria such as the day/s of the week that work best for you, or the ages of her children if you are hoping to meet up for a playdate with your own children. You could ‘suggest a cuppa’ or write a message to an individual mum if you wish or, if you would prefer to go along to a group meet-up rather than a one-to-one coffee date, you can have a look at the upcoming Socials (these are group meet-ups that anyone can go to).
What is next for Mummy Social? We will continue to raise awareness of maternal loneliness through our social media campaigns and will ensure that we keep this conversation going so that no mum ever feel alone.
We will continue to raise awareness of all things experienced during motherhood – the highs, the lows and the bits in-between.
Anything else to add? Mummy Social isn’t just for new mums. It’s for every mum, from all walks of life. It doesn’t matter how you became a mum, how old your children are, whether you work or are a stay at home mum… Mummy Social is inclusive and non-judgemental.
