Getting a child ready for school for their first year is tied with all types of emotion. So being prepared can really help in order to keep the excitement but also calm the anxiety that comes with it. With Lily, she was very much ready for school but I think that’s because we were talking about it for at least 9 months before she even entered into reception. Talking about school and being open with them about the changes is important. Keeping it light and exciting about new friends, new teachers, new toys, becoming a big girl/boy even though inside you might be feeling worried about the transition is key. Children cannot become what they haven’t seen or learnt, so if they see you are excited and happy about this big change, then they will be. Here are a few things we did as a family to prepare our child for school:
1. Talked openly and positively about it.
2. Ask them what they are excited about starting school.
3. Did home learning/activities with them like writing, numbers and drawing telling them these are the types of things that you will be doing in big school.
4. Getting them excited about going shopping for shoes and uniforms and making a day or morning of it.
5. The fact she was in a pre school nursery, set us up easily for a morning routine.
6. We made a fuss the night before the first day of school and in the morning I made Lily her favourite breakfast. At the end of her first week, we got her a small gift to mark her completing her first week and took her to McDonalds as a treat.
You know your child best and you will just know instinctively when it comes down to it how to prepare them for the next stage of their life.
