If you are pregnant or have just had a baby, you might have heard the term ‘baby brain’ bounded about. You may be thinking you are experiencing this so called ‘baby brain’ but according to small studies that have been done in different countries this whole idea of being cognitively challenged is actually a myth.
What researchers in Spain and Netherlands did find, were changes to the grey matter particularly in the frontal and temporal lobes of new mothers. Grey matter helps with performing tasks, empathy and forming attachments to people. They believe the reason why the grey matter reduces is because we as mothers are getting ready to form attachments to our little babies and to ensure we don’t think negatively towards them (I try to think positive at dinner time whilst I feed three kids but maybe something is wrong with my grey matter HAHA).
Anyway despite all this, if you want to feel less foggy, there are some foods that are great for your brain because whatever we eat, our brain has to use some of those nutrients to work. As much as refined sugar is one of those things we crave in those early months or even years, try to be mindful of your intake because sometimes it can exacerbate the blood sugar crashes and the tiredness. Try to add the following into your diet somehow…
- Turmeric (add black pepper for absorbency)
- Leafy Greens (Spinach, Kale, Lettuce, Beet Greens)
- Dark Chocolate (the darker the better 70%+)
- Flax seeds
And don’t forget to drink plenty of water either!!
