A lot of people contact us who suffer from really heavy periods or endometriosis wondering if our reusable sanitary pads will work for them and the answer is yes! Endometriosis is defined as a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb starts to grow in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Endometriosis can affect women of any age.
Some women have heavy periods all the time, from their very first period. For others, they start after years or decades of typical periods or following giving birth.
I am regularly contacted by women who have to change their pad or tampon every hour, who have to wear two pads at once overnight, who leak through every night and who really suffer every month during their period. They can’t believe that reusable pads will work for them. So I want to share some stories from women in similar situation, in case you find it helpful.
Yes, you can use our reusable maxi pads for really heavy periods. You will find that as they are so absorbent you won’t have to change them as often as you would disposable pads. The feedback that we have had is that they last roughly twice or three times as long as the equivalent disposable would.
“I always leak the first 2 nights of my period since having my daughter and even 2 night pads is not enough! Your maxi pads weren’t just comfy to wear compared to normal pads but they also didn’t leak meaning my sheets are safe at last!”
“I have always suffered from very heavy periods. I’ve always been reliant on big brands with wings and to be honest for years always used anything from 3-5 packs a month.
Even when doubled up, I leaked through these on my first two days, when heaviest. I have been in so many embarrassing situations when they just haven’t been good enough.
So I decided to give Mama designs reusable sanitary towels ago, I mean what did I have to lose? So I decided to invest, it was a risk, as I bought 3 packs and what if they didn’t work? I’ve been using them for 5 months now and I honestly wouldn’t look back.
They’re so comfortable and I haven’t had one leak. I bought the largest size and they last about three times longer than a standard disposable pad.
I wear them at night and don’t feel as if I am wearing anything.
Trust me, give them a go and you’ll be left thinking, why didn’t I do this sooner.” Kate B
“This is my fourth box of Mama Designs pads. I have tried them all but yours can’t be beaten for me. As someone with endometriosis comfort and absorbency is life!” Amazon customer
“I have really heavy periods and I have used these for the last two periods. No leaks at all, more comfortable and I have found them better than normal pads.” Kim M
“My periods have always been awful. I bleed so heavily I wear two pads. I regularly leak. I was really sceptical about these working for me but tried one pack. OMG, they really work, I am completely converted, they have changed everything!” Louise H
“I’m so impressed, so much comfort and not going into too much detail but no leakage and they are amazing.” Amazon customer
“They are amazing, I bought the maxi size and they are so comfortable, No leaks and I actually forgot I was wearing them!”
How do they work?
The pad has a cotton top layer which is really comfortable next to your skin. The pads have wings that popper into your pants. You need to wear them with tight fitting pants and they won’t budge. . The maxi pads have a triple inner absorbent layer of microfibre. This draws the blood in. The outer is waterproof PUL, which acts to protect you from leaks.
How do I know if they are full as they are black?
You will notice that your pads are full as you will see the blood start to sit on top of the pad instead of disappearing or soaking into it.
How do I wash and dry them?
There are various ways, you can wash by hand, you can throw in the machine (in a net bag or straight in), however some people like to pre wash or rinse until the water runs clear, so they can then wash with their normal dark wash. Pre washing in cold water prevents your pads from staining too. We recommend you do not use fabric softener as this reduces the life of your pads. For drying we recommend air drying and the little peg drying frames for socks and underwear are perfect for this. You can get them from the pound shop, Ikea or even Amazon.
How many pads will I need?
This will vary person to person, depending on how heavy your periods are and how often you want to wash them. Most people like to have a selection of sizes for different points of their cycle. If you are concerned about the outlay for a lot of pads or are unsure exactly how many you will need, you might want to gradually build your pad collection, month by month.
